The refugee information pack helps refugees and asylum seekers who have just arrived into Australia about to start a new life. The information pack is based around a particular ethnic group and focuses on a particular area of Australia. It also incorporates colours and patterns that are familiar to the chosen ethnic group.
For this information pack I have created it for the Hazara people of Afghanistan who migrate to Dandenong. There is a large Afghani/Hazara population in Dandenong, so much so that it has a street specifically filled with Afghani businesses, named Afghan Bazaar.
The information pack designed simply. It is made up of three A5 sized booklets and one A3 sized map. They all use the same colour scheme and design with slight variations in the patterns. The colours and the geometric shapes are a modern take of the traditional Hazara pattern. The bright blues, pinks and yellows are seen in their traditional dress and other patterns they create.
The three booklets are placed on top of one another with the A3 poster folded down into eighths to wrap around the booklets. They are secured together a clip for portability, and ease of use. The map and booklet contain similar patterns to fit in seamlessly.
The information pack is very detailed, with extra detail on the map. The map covers the whole suburb of Dandenong with a part of the surrounding suburbs too. The large map itself take up half of the A3 poster with a zoomed in section of the town centre where places of interest are concentrated. The map also has some useful words and phrases for the refugees to start learning, which will come in handy if they are lost or in trouble, they can point to the translated words to communicate with others.
The guides have all been laid out neatly with easy to follow page numbers and headings. The typefaces used are both sans serif typefaces, Bebas Nueue and Arial Narrow, as they compliment each other dynamically.
Overall the simplicity of the information pack is what will make it effective. Highly portable if it’s needed, with bright colours and a contemporary pattern will help in people want to read the documents. As a simple guide with all the essential information for a Hazara refugee to enter Australia, it will help the process of settling in to a specific area of interest.
