The GDT Signature Project
The Kimono
Why the Kimono? It’s versatile. Genderless. Timeless.
It’s sexy.
The Mood
You know that feeling when the sun comes up, you smell the salty sea breeze in the air, it’s warm, you are content. You hear the whirr of the coffee machine as the smell of fresh roasted coffee beans mixes in with the fresh ocean mist. You get out of bed, you’re feeling coy. You wrap yourself up in your kimono. Your partner hands you a fresh cup of coffee as you admire the waves crashing on the shore. You take a sip.
F&%#!
That’s hot.
You just spilt some coffee on your kimono. But it’s ok. It becomes another story to tell on the rich tapestry of life… Or in this case, your kimono.
Inspo
Whimsy. Light. Salty. Chaos.
This is the essence I want to capture with my upcycled kimono. I have an old bed sheet that was repurposed as a painters drop sheet, and now, repurposed as my kimono. The blue sheet has a big blue paint splatter, which reminded me of The Great Wave off Kanagawa by Hokusai. Ideally I’d like to embroider around the paint splatter to make this more of a feature and more closely resemble a wave splatter.
